Better TMDM

Issue description

The TMDM has various conceptual issues which complicated things under the hood unnecessarily. This issues serves as a container for the individual ones. Some of the problems are straightforward without any implications for the user, others are so difficult that they most likely will never be realized, but it is still worth mentioning them.
