Index and search should split the main view

Issue description

Currently the index and search tab take up the whole width of the code editor. This is unnecessary and requires a lot of switching back and forth at times which increases subjectively the cognitive load unnecessarily. It would be better if a click on index (or search) would split the view in half and the code tab remains visible in the left half while the index takes up the right half.
